COR Leadership Retreat: Defining the best of the best

“Don’t screw around with me Maverick. You’re a hell of an instinctive pilot. Maybe too good. I’d like to bust your butt but I can’t. I got another problem here. I gotta send somebody from this squadron to Miramar. I gotta do something here, I still can’t believe it. I gotta give you your dream shot! I’m gonna send you up against the best. You two characters are going to Top Gun.” – Stinger, Top Gun
If you’ve ever seen the movie Top Gun, you’ll remember this scene the rest of your life. Maverick was extremely gifted and perhaps had the hard-headed arrogance to be the best fighter pilot in the Navy. Now, he was going to get his dream shot.
When I think of BYX COR Leadership Training, it is our version of Top Gun. However, there are some important differences, like there are far fewer fighter jets. How do we filter our ambition and drive to be the best of the best in a way that is conformed to the image of Christ?
The COR Leadership Retreat drives home words like vision, influence, aspiration, development and success. It is about challenging our hearts, minds and bodies. It is about working as a team, knowing when to lead and when to follow. There is strategic planning, brand management, investing, entrepreneurship and opportunities to glean wisdom from alumni in exceptional leadership roles across a variety of vocations and industries. Part of the week is actually climbing the mountains.
These are all words and phrases that get our hearts pumping for those fighter jet scenes and awesome 1980s soundtracks. It sounds epic, and it is, but what COR so different from any other leadership program?
We need believers and leaders in the workplace to speak truth to us when success is not at hand, when our hearts are pumping from fear rather than ambition and when we just do not know what to do. We need to hear from men who have made mistakes and poor decisions. We need to hear from men that live in a world that has never demanded more from them in terms of home life and work life. We need to see how men have grown to love and serve in the church while desperately praying that God would provide the wisdom to lead their wives, families and careers. We need to understand how to find rest in the work Jesus has already done on our behalf while the storms of life are raging.
In this program, you’ll not only hear words and phrases like service, resolve, discernment, obedience, failure, peacemaking, empathy and unity, but you will hear from men that have experienced these things personally.
What has always made BYX different from much of the world we live in is that the older brothers serve the younger brothers. The COR Leadership Retreat is the epic opportunity to see this concept grow from our chapters into the world beyond college. It is a first-hand, up close and personal look at how the gospel has transformed college men into faithful leaders in the workplace through both success and failure.
The COR Leadership Retreat is about the best of the best. We just define this pursuit of excellence differently. Like that Top Gun scene, this is what should make our hearts pound with joy and expectation: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.”
COR is the once-in-a-lifetime dream shot I wish existed when I was in college. I urge you to consider applying – now is your one shot!
