Manifest Destiny was the belief widely held by Americans in the 19th Century, that the United States was destined to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coasts. But it was more than a belief. These two words, Manifest Destiny, invoked the idea of divine endorsement for the territorial expansion of the United States.
It was this idea, this bed-rock sense of God’s will to expand the territory of America, from sea to shining sea, that motivated the leaders of our nation during that time. This belief not only shaped the political, social and economic decisions in that day, but it also shaped the lives of many ordinary Americans who left all that was known to them and their families in order to “head west.”
Although the leadership of BYX has no plans of acquiring millions of acres of land, and we certainly have no intentions of going to war with Mexico, we do believe that God is calling us to expand our influence throughout this nation.

I’ll begin with the “Why?”

We earnestly believe that BYX offers the greatest college fraternity experience for a young Christian man.
So, I pose this question: If we believe the above statement is true, why would we not be motivated to expand?
·      To intentionally go north, south, east and west in order to establish BYX chapters on university campuses throughout this nation

·      To provide other young Christian men the opportunity to benefit from a fraternity that is truly Christ-centered

·      To establish the presence of a brotherhood of Christian men that can impact their respective campuses

God has mightily used this fraternity to help shape the lives of thousands of men over the past 27 years. Like so many of you, God used older men in BYX to challenge and inspire me to love, follow and live for Jesus in a way I had not previously known. Now, I am honored and thrilled to lead the charge as we enter into a season in the life of this fraternity where we can begin to focus more on our efforts to expand.
When I was going through the interview process for this position, I asked Wendel Weaver, “Is there a ceiling on the amount of chapters we want to start? In other words, do you guys have a goal of getting to 50 or 100 chapters before you say, we are big enough?
I loved his response: “When we have a chapter represented on every college campus in America, we will have hit our ceiling.”
Does he believe that is really possible? I don’t know. But what is clear is that his desire and passion IS for BYX to expand to EVERY campus where God leads us. The BYX leadership is thrilled that we are now at a place where we can begin to focus more on this goal!
The “How?”
Up until this point in the history of our fraternity, we have not had the time or resources necessary to focus on establishing new chapters. If there was a group of men interested in bringing BYX to their campus, they were given a fairly lengthy list of things they were required to do in order to move through the process. Those requirements were put in place years ago, and they have not changed.
What has changed is that I have been brought on staff in order to oversee and devote myself to assist college leaders through the process of bringing BYX to their campuses. One of my responsibilities is to help raise the money needed to give each of our new chapters the necessary financial support for their first couple of years. As I step in and take the lead to establish and develop new chapters, Jason and the advisors will be more freed up to focus on the internal growth and health of our current chapters.
In moving forward, this new change is what is best for our staff, for our current members, as well as for new chapters that we will add in the years to come. As a result, we are expecting to expand at a much more rapid rate than we ever have before!
So how do we expect to expand? What is the new game plan?
We believe the best way to expand is to tap into the relationships of our current members. At National Officer Training in November, we asked 160 officers to text me the name of a friend that might be interested in starting a BYX chapter on a new campus. In response, I received about 50 text messages, which led to about 40 legitimate leads on 13 different campuses!
We are obviously not at a place to start 13 chapters in one year, but those leads have allowed us to focus on a number of schools where we would love to see a BYX chapter established.
I have been following up with those leads and various others that we have received. Although it’s still a little too early to reveal where we are planning to expand this year, things are coming together at some pretty exciting places! We will keep you updated on the progress of our prospective chapters throughout this semester and year.

There is one more thing I will say about our new game plan. The last thing we intend to do is begin starting chapters that we can’t support or sustain. Our desire is to develop a strategy to expand at a healthy rate and, at the same time, invest more fully in the growth and health of our current chapters.
As we continue to grow from within and expand out, our National Staff will have to increase to meet the demand. We want you guys (current members) to begin thinking about the possibility of joining the national staff as we continue to grow in the years ahead.
So what can you do to help us as we seek to expand?
If you know of a college guy who might be interested in starting a chapter on a new campus, I would love for you to email me at brianlee@betaupsilonchi.organd/or text me at (979) 575-3114. Include his name, number and the name of the university he attends.
This will be a tremendous help in praying through where we feel God is leading us as we move forward. Who knows? Many of you may help us to plant and establish a new chapter that will impact the lives of countless men for years to come!
Thank you so much for your support and for joining with us as we “head west” and every other direction!
