I recently watched a video of a testimony shared at my church that struck me as a common struggle that I hear among my young Christian brothers. My family and I are covenant members of The Village Church in Flower Mound Texas and have been for 9 years now. The video is not about my church or intended to be a promotion of my church, but it is a real life testimony of a man’s struggle with pornography. I want my young brothers to see these stories because it can alert you to the damaging effects of pornography.
Our culture bombards young men very early on with images that can stick in our minds for years. Everything from magazines to billboards, to TV shows and commercials that glorify sex. All of these images and messages shape what “culture” defines as masculinity. Pedro’s testimony is powerful as it speaks to a life long struggle for him that began at an early age and effected every area of his life from his spiritual journey with Jesus to his relationship with his wife and his children. The fight is real and we don’t stand a chance without Jesus.
BYX is a great tool for which God can use to sharpen men through one another. The caution in that sharpening comes down the the reason for the sharpening. As brothers, we must remember that forcing ourselves into accountable relationships with one another just for the sake of “not sinning” is by definition white knuckling it as Pedro described. Pedro described his goal at one point was to stop looking at porn. He was successful in that adventure for a few days to a few weeks before the temptations of porn overtook him once again. We can be really good in the world of BYX at helping one another through our white knuckle adventures for a time, however in the end it doesn’t lead us anywhere but frustration.
The ultimate goal of sharpening one another and holding one another accountable must become more of Jesus and a greater understand of the Gospel. Ephesians 2 clearly speaks the boldness of the Gospel of Christ.
“And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Chris Jesus.” Ephesians 2:1-6
In understanding the Gospel, we understand that we are in our nature sinful and that there is absolutely nothing we can do to bring about favor from God. Only the shed blood of Jesus as payment for our sin is sufficient to bring us right standing before God.
There are times where BYX brothers are desiring to hold one another accountable and help one another through the temptations of pornography. In those times, we must be careful to not help our brothers “white knuckle” their way in prevention of sin, but encourage them to grow in their affection and delight for Jesus and through that growth the power of sin and pornography becomes less than desirable.
